Dravyaguna Vigyan (AyUG-DG)

Dravyaguna is a fundamental branch of Ayurveda that deals with the detailed study of medicinal substances (Dravya) and their therapeutic application. It forms the scientific backbone of Ayurvedic pharmacology by explaining how drugs act in the body based on their inherent properties and interactions with biological systems. The subject provides a rational and systematic understanding of natural medicines, primarily derived from plants, as well as minerals and animal products used in classical formulations.

The core principles of Dravyaguna are explained through concepts such as Rasa (taste), Guna (qualities), Virya (potency), Vipaka (post-digestive effect), and Prabhava (specific action). These principles help in understanding a drug’s pharmacodynamics and its effects on Dosha, Dhatu, Mala, and Agni, enabling personalized and precise treatment. Emphasis is also placed on drug identification, nomenclature, classification, habitat, collection, processing, and storage of medicinal plants.

In modern Ayurvedic education, Dravyaguna serves as a bridge between classical wisdom and contemporary science. Students are trained to correlate traditional concepts with modern pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, and pharmacology. Practical training in medicinal plant gardens, raw drug identification, and formulation analysis enhances clinical competence and research aptitude.

At our Ayurvedic Medical College, DravyagunaVigyan is taught under Department of Dravyaguna Vigyan (within an area of 242.19 square meter) in the second professional year (a total of 400 Marks and 400 lecture hours in the form of Paper I-Fundamental Dravyaguna & Paper II-Applied Dravyaguna) with a balanced approach that integrates classical texts, experiential learning, and evidence-based research. The discipline equips future Ayurvedic physicians with the knowledge to select appropriate single drugs and formulations, ensuring safe, effective, and holistic patient care rooted in the timeless principles of Ayurveda.
